Iran's Supreme Leader Has Prostate Surgery

Iranian President Hassan Rohani visits Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the hospital on September 8.

Iranian state television says Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has undergone successful prostate surgery.

Alireza Marandi, the head of Khamenei's medical team, said the operation on the 75-year-old Khamenei was done in the capital, Tehran.

Marandi said Khamenei would remain in hospital for a few days after the September 8 surgery, which was described as "routine."

Khamenei has final say on all state matters in Iran and has been the country's top leader since 1989.

He told Iranian state TV before the operation that there was "no reason for concern" but asked people to pray for him.

Commentators say official comments and state media reports on the health of Iran's top leader are extremely rare.
