Iran Under Fire At Security Council

Western members of the United Nations Security Council have accused Iran of shipping arms to Syria.

At a Security Council meeting on September 20, the United States, Britain, France, and Germany expressed serious concern at Tehran's arms exports to President Bashar al-Assad's regime in violation of a UN ban against all weapons exports.

Ambassadors from the Western powers also accused Iran of ignoring demands from the UN to open key nuclear facilities to its inspectors, voicing concern that Tehran’s goal is to build a nuclear arsenal.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said Security Council members cannot be complacent about Iran's "latest leaps forward in its prohibited nuclear activities."

Tehran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful civilian use.
