London Olympics Website Blocked In Iran

WASHINGTON -- The official website for the London 2012 Olympics appears to have been blocked by the Iranian authorities.

A number of Iranian citizens have been writing on social media that they are not able to connect to London2012.com and are instead being redirected to a local government news service.

There has been no official government reaction to the complaints.

Iran has one of the world’s toughest Internet censorship policies, blocking scores of websites deemed immoral or against national security.

Facebook, the website of RFE/RL's Radio Farda, and the virtual U.S. Embassy for Iran are among the banned sites.

Last month, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered senior officials to set up a new body to oversee the Internet.
