Jail Term Confirmed For Iran President's Aide

Ali Akbar Javanfekr appears to be caught in an ongoing power struggle between Ahmadinejad's backers and Khamenei loyalists.

Iranian media reports say that President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's press adviser has been sentenced to six months in jail.

The Fars news agency quoted Iran's chief prosecutor as saying on February 13 that Ali Akbar Javanfekr was sentenced to jail after an appeal was rejected.

The chief prosecutor, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, did not say what charge earned the prison sentence, but added that Javanfekr had "more than one case before the judiciary."

Javanfekr's lawyer, Qahreman Shojaee, confirmed the jail term to the official IRNA news agency.

Javanfekr had been previously convicted of insulting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The case appears to be part of an ongoing power struggle between Ahmadinejad's backers and Khamenei loyalists.
