Iranian Road Accident Kills Afghan Refugees

Iranian media reports say that a road accident has killed 18 people, including 15 Afghans, in southeastern Iran.

The semiofficial Fars news agency said a truck smuggling fuel burst into flames on April 5 after it crashed into a vehicle carrying a group of Afghan refugees.

According to Fars, the 15 Afghans killed had illegally crossed the border into Iran.

The accident also killed three Iranians.

The Mehr news agency said the incident occurred near the town of Rigan, in Kerman Province.

Mehr said the area is a transit route for Afghans illegally crossing the border to find work in the Islamic republic.

An estimated one million Afghans live in Iran illegally.

Iran has a notorious traffic safety record, with more than 400,000 accidents and about 20,000 deaths on its roads every year.
