The United Nations envoy to Iraq told the UN Security Council that some 400,000 people have been displaced this year by violence in western Iraq.
Nickolay Mladenov also warned the Security Council on March 27 that without more funding, the Untied Nations "very soon will be unable to continue its humanitarian assistance to those fleeing the fighting" in Iraq's western province of Anbar.
Mladenov said the conflict in neighboring Syria is feeding sectarian tensions in Iraq and offers terrorist networks opportunities to establish crossborder links.
Nearly 8,000 civilians were killed in Iraq in 2013, in the worst protracted period of violence since 2008.
