Deadly IS Bomb Hits Italian Consulate In Cairo

Islamic State (IS) militants say they are behind a deadly explosion that severely damaged the Italian Consulate in Egypt's capital, Cairo.

At least one person died and several people were injured, including police officers and civilians, when a car bomb went off at the building, whose main entrance was almost totally destroyed.

A purported Twitter statement from the IS extremist group said Muslims should stay away from sites like the consulate, as they are "legitimate targets" for strikes.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi spoke to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and said the two countries will stand together "in the fight against terrorism and fanaticism."

Islamist militants have stepped up their attacks after the military overthrew President Muhammad Morsi in July 2013, killing dozens of security forces personnel.

Last month in Cairo, Egypt's chief prosecutor was killed by a car bomb attack.
