Israel has denied that a man with dual U.S. and Israeli citizenship arrested in Egypt on suspicion of espionage is a spy.
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on June 14 that Ilan Grapel was a student who "has no connection to any intelligence agency, not in Israel, not in the United States, and not on Mars."
Grapel, 27, was arrested in Egypt on June 12 and ordered held for 15 days.
Egypt has alleged he is an Israeli spy out to recruit agents and monitor the events of the revolt that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak.
His family says Grapel is a law student who was working for an aid organization in Cairo.
Lieberman added that he hoped the incident -- which he described as a "mistake, or bizarre behavior" on the part of the Egyptians -- would end quickly.
