Jailed Former Ukrainian Interior Minister Examined By Doctors In Prison

Former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko gestures from a caged area during a court hearing in February.

Ukraine’s jailed former interior minister has been examined by medical doctors at the Kyiv prison where he is jailed.

Prison officials say his state of health also will be assessed by medical personnel outside of jail, at a Kyiv city clinic, in the near future.

Yuriy Lutsenko was sentenced in February to four years in prison on charges of embezzlement and abuse of office.

He denies all charges, saying the case against him was politically motivated.

Lutsenko's examination in prison on April 4 comes a day after representatives of the U.S.-based pro-democracy advocacy group Freedom House visited him in his cell.
