Russian officials say a joint operation with U.S. and Afghan drug agencies eliminated six illegal drug labs in Afghanistan along with 5.6 tons of narcotics.
Russia's Federal Service for Drugs Control said the sites were in Afghanistan's northeastern province of Badakhshan.
It said the labs were synthesizing several types of drugs from opium.
Drugs confiscated in the operation included 180 kilograms of heroin, 1,500 kilograms of morphine, and 1,200 kilograms of opium.
Seventy Afghan police took part in the operation along with Russian officers and agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
Drugs produced by the labs reportedly were meant to be smuggled to Central Asia and Russia, from where criminal gangs often forward Afghan heroin and opium onto the international black market.
