Kazakh, Turkmen Presidents To Open New Railway

The presidents of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan plan to officially open a new railway connecting the two Central Asian countries on May 11.

After talks with his Turkmen counterpart, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, on May 10, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev told journalists in Astana the new railway eventually will be extended to connect the two Caspian states with the countries of the Persian Gulf.

The ceremony for the opening of the new railway will take place in Kazakhstan’s southwestern city of Aqtau.

Nazarbaev said it will be a historic event.

Berdymukhamedov began his visit to Kazakhstan on May 10. He told journalists that he and Nazarbaev discussed bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
