Kazakh Rights Activists Set Up Committee To Defend Lawyer

Sergei Utkin

ALMATY -- Kazakh human rights activists have set up a committee to defend a prominent media rights lawyer, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

The announcement was made by several of Sergei Utkin's supporters in Almaty today.

Utkin is an Almaty-based lawyer who works with independent media outlets and opposition journalists. He is currently on trial at Almaty's administrative court on charges of tax evasion. If found guilty, he could face several years in jail.

Utkin and his supporters insist that he has already paid all outstanding taxes and the case is politically motivated.

The court verdict is expected on December 28.
