Loughner Given Seven Life Terms For Shooting Congresswoman

Jared Lee Loughner

The man who wounded a U.S. congresswoman and killed six other people in a shooting rampage has been sentenced to life in prison.

Jared Lee Loughner, 24, was given seven consecutive life terms, plus 140 years, for the January 2011 spree in Tucson, Arizona.

Former Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head and now has sight and speech impairments and a paralyzed right arm, was present in the courtroom for the sentencing.

She did not speak to Loughner, but her husband, U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly, said Loughner had failed in his attempt to create a dark and evil world.

Loughner, who pleaded guilty to murder charges, was diagnosed by court-appointed experts as suffering from schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.
