Man Sentenced To Five Years For Bomb Threat In Almaty

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- A court in Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, has sentenced a man who threatened to blow up the city administration building o five years in prison.

Yevgeny Rychkov was found guilty in false bomb threat on April 7 and sentenced the same day.

On January 13, the Almaty city administration headquarters and nearby offices were evacuated after Rychkov entered the building and threated to blow it up with explosives he claimed to have in a suitcase.

Rychkov surrendered to police after more than two hours of negotiations, and no explosives were found.

Police said later that Rychkov was trying to protest a 2008 court decision.

Such incidents are rare in tightly controlled Kazakhstan.
