The UN Security Council has expressed "grave concern" over the resumption of hostilities in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Palestinians.
The 15-member Security Council called on the two sides to restart negotiations to urgently reach a "sustainable and lasting cease-fire."
Hostilities resumed on August 19, ending a 10-day period of calm.
It had been the longest break from fighting since Israel launched its Gaza offensive on July 8 in a bid to end rocket fire into its territory.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel's military operation will continue until Hamas ends the rocket fire.
More than 2,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have died in the violence.
Nearly 70 Israelis, nearly all of them soldiers, have been killed as well.
