Militants Kill Nine Members Of Iraqi Security Forces

Officials say militants have launched a wave of attacks against security forces in Iraq, killing nine police officers and soldiers.

On September 25, one policeman was killed in Tarmiyah, north of Baghdad, while farther north, gunmen attacked a patrol near Baquba, killing one policeman.

Another police officer was shot dead near the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk.

Gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Mosul in north Iraq, killing a soldier, while one of the assailants was also killed.

Gunmen also attacked a checkpoint in east Baghdad, killing two police.

In west Baghdad, gunmen killed army General Saleh Hassan Fezaa, while others attacked a checkpoint in the south of the capital, killing two soldiers.

Violence in Iraq is down from its peak in 2006 and 2007, but deadly attacks are still carried out frequently.
