Philippines: 1,000 Still Missing From Floods

Policemen dig among debris and destroyed houses during rescue operations following floods in Iligan City in the Philippines.

The government of the Philippines says more than 1,000 people remain missing following the devastating floods that have hit the country.

Reports say the toll from the floods and landslides now stands at 1,080 people confirmed dead, and 1,079 missing.

Officials at the Office of Civil Defense said rescuers continue to recover bodies around the worst-hit cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

Reports say entire neighborhoods in Cagayan de Oro, a city of half a million people, and nearby Iligan, were swept away as rivers overflowed their banks following deluges of rain one week ago from Tropical Storm Washi.
