Muslim Prayer Hall Ransacked In Corsica

A Muslim prayer hall has been ransacked in Corsica a day after an attack on firefighters left two of them and a police officer injured on the French island.

Dozens of people had gathered in the capital Ajaccio on December 25 to show their support for the wounded emergency officials.

The gathering turned violent and some in the crowd vandalized a prayer room. They also attempted to burn copies of the Koran, French media reported.

Officials said the firefighters had been attacked by “several hooded youth”when responding to an emergency call in a poor neighborhood.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on Twitter that the break-in was "an unacceptable desecration", while also condemning the "intolerable attack" on the firefighters.

The violence came amid heightened security measures in France following the November 13 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.
