NATO says it is reviewing a request from the Iraqi government for help building up its military.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told regional partners at the NATO and Gulf Security conference in Qatar on December 11 that "Iraq has now requested NATO support in defense capacity building."
The request comes as Iraq is battling Islamic State (IS) militants who seized control of large swaths northern and western Iraq during the summer.
Stoltenberg said IS militants "poses a grave threat to the Iraqi and the Syrian people, the wider region and all of our nations."
The NATO chief said: "The more we cooperate, the safer we will be."
NATO leaders at a September summit agreed that fighting IS militants is a top priority for the alliance.
Many of NATO member states in a U.S.-led international coalition that is working to combat IS militants and to help Baghdad.
