Moscow's Central Election Commission chairman says opposition figure and anticorruption blogger Aleksei Navalny will be officially registered as a candidate for Moscow mayor on July 17.
Chairman Valentin Gorbunov told journalists that there were no problems with Navalny’s registration forms so there would be no problem certifying Navalny as a candidate.
Gorbunov said the current criminal case against Navalany has no influence on the registration process.
Gorbunov was asked what would happen if a court finds Navalny guilty of the embezzlement charges he faces.
According to Interfax, Gorbunov replied that it is still not known what the court will decide and if Navalny is found guilty, when a sentence will take effect.
Navalny is charged with of embezzling some $510,000 from a lumber company in 2009 and would be disqualified from holding public office if found guilty.
He and supporters have accused authorities of a politically motivated prosecution.
