The eldest daughter of Russia’s slain opposition politician Boris Nemtsov has received a $1.1 million prize in Poland for championing democracy and human rights.
The 31-year-old Zhanna Nemtsova received the Lech Walesa Solidarity Prize at an August 4 ceremony in Warsaw from Poland’s President Bronislaw Komorowski and from the chairman of the prize committee, former President Lech Walesa.
The Solidarity Prize was established by Poland’s Foreign Ministry.
Nemtsova has left Russia since her father was shot dead on February 27 near the Kremlin by an unknown assassin.
In July, Nemtsova announced she was leaving her job as a journalist at the Russian news outlet RBK in order to join Deutsche Welle’s Bonn office as a reporter in their Russian department.
Nemtsova says she had received threats in Russia as she pressed for further investigations into her father’s murder.
