Dozens of workers at the Tuplar Energy Services Company in Kazakhstan’s western city of Aqtau have launched a strike, demanding that five months' worth of overdue salaries be paid.
The company supplies equipment to Kazakhstan's massive Qashaghan (Kashagan) oil field.
The company’s administration blamed its failure to pay the salaries on a foreign company's hesitance to compensate Tulpar for work performed.
In April, the North Caspian Operating Company that runs the Qashaghan project said the oil field will cease operations and might not start production until 2016 due to the necessity to replace underwater pipelines connecting the Caspian offshore site to Kazakhstan's mainland.
A strike by oil workers in the region in 2011 ended with clashes between protesters and police that left 17 protesters dead.
