Wrestling Reinstated For Olympic Games

Wrestling had been cut from the Olympic roster earlier this year amid complaints that it was not sufficiently exciting for modern audiences.

Wrestling has been reinstated as a sport at the Olympic Games.

Meeting on September 8 in Buenos Aires , the International Olympic Committee (IOC), voted to include wrestling in the 2020 and 2024 games.

In February, the IOC cut wrestling from the Olympic roster amid complaints that it was not sufficiently exciting for modern audiences.

As part of its campaign to be reinstated, the sport adopted new competition formats and scoring systems.

Wrestling powers including Iran, Russia, and the United States also lobbied to have the sport reinstated.

Some IOC members have said the decision to cut the sport, which was part of the ancient Olympics in Greece, was a mistake.

Also September 8, the IOC rejected including baseball, softball, and squash as Olympic sports.

Baseball and softball were voted out of the Olympics in 2005.

At the same meeting in Buenos Aires, the IOC also awarded the 2020 summer games to Tokyo.
