Realist Painter Lucian Freud Dies At 88

A self-portrait, titled "Reflection," by British artist Lucian Freud, on display at Correr's Museum in Venice in 2005

British realist painter Lucian Freud, grandson of the Austrian father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, has died after an illness.

The younger Freud was known for his unflattering portraits, particularly of nudes, which were said to explore the subject's relationship with the artist.

He was 88.

In recent years, his paintings had commanded high prices at auction, including one of an overweight nude woman sleeping on a couch that sold in 2008 for $33.6 million.

Freud died at his home in London late on July 20.
