Pakistan's interior minister announced on September 2 that the border crossing into Afghanistan at Chaman would be temporarily closed. Fear of Taliban rule has caused tens of thousands of Afghans to flee the country, with many streaming into Pakistan via Afghanistan’s southeastern Kandahar Province. An RFE/RL Radio Mashaal correspondent on the scene said that despite the announcement, some Afghans with identity documents showing residence in the districts of Spin Boldak or Kandahar were still able to cross the border.
