Fresh Border Skirmishes Break Out In Kashmir

Indian Army soldiers patrol near the Line of Control, a ceasefire line dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan, on August 7.

Pakistani and Indian forces have exchanged fresh gunfire in Kashmir, further destabilizing a 10-year cease-fire in the disputed Muslim-majority region.

One Indian border guard was injured after Pakistani soldiers opened fire southwest of Jammu in what Indian border authorities called an "unprovoked firing."

Pakistan, meanwhile, has accused Indian forces of unilaterally firing on its border posts in Kashmir and neighboring Punjab province, sparking an "intermittent exchange of fire."

The skirmishes are the latest in a spate of cross-border fighting between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

The Himalayan territory of Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan by a UN-monitored border, but is claimed in full by both countries.
