Pakistani security officials say they have arrested a former senior militant leader who was allegedly involved in the 2002 murder of U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl.
A spokesman for Pakistan's paramilitary force said that Qari Abdul Hayee, known as Asadullah, was detained on March 17 in the southern city of Karachi.
The unidentified spokesman said Asadullah was formerly the head of the sectarian group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) in the southern province of Sindh.
He did not elaborate on Asadullah's connection to the Pearl murder case.
Pearl, 38, was the South Asia bureau chief for "The Wall Street Journal" when he was killed after being abducted in Karachi on January 23, 2002.
