Hundreds of lawyers rallied in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, on September 9 to protest against the government's recent appointment of a female judge to the Supreme Court. If confirmed, Justice Ayesha Malik will be the first female judge on Pakistan's highest court. The lawyers argue that her appointment violated the "the seniority principle," which states that only the most senior judge can be elevated to the Supreme Court. Malik is ranked fourth in seniority at the Lahore High Court.
