Pakistani Officials: U.S. Missiles Kill Nine Militants Near Afghan Border

Local security officials in Pakistan's tribal region say missiles launched by pilotless U.S. drone planes on May 16 killed nine militants.

The Pakistani officials said one missile attack targeted a compound near the border with Afghanistan, killing six militants.

The attack took place in the town of Mir Ali, about 40 kilometers east of Miranshah in the North Waziristan tribal district -- a stronghold of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.

Local officials said later that a second U.S. missile attack targeted a vehicle carrying fleeing militants in North Waziristan, killing three.
