Former CIA director and U.S. Army General David Petraeus has pleaded guilty in a federal court to a charge of mishandling classified material.

A Justice Department statement from March 3 said a plea agreement has been filed in the U.S. District Court in North Carolina.

The statement said Petraeus was charged with one count of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material.

The statement said Petraeus had signed an agreement pleading guilty to the single criminal count.

The case was filed in Charlotte, North Carolina, the home of Paula Broadwell, who was Petraeus's biographer and former mistress.

Investigators were looking into whether Petraeus improperly shared classified materials with Broadwell during the time the two were having an affair.

Both have apologized and said their relationship started after Petraeus resigned from the military.
