Aleksei Navalny's announcement this week that he plans to run for president and give a voice to Russia's disenfranchised has suddenly made the 2018 election much more interesting.
It also raises an important question: Can the populist antiestablishment tsunami that has engulfed the West also strike Russia? And can Navalny ride the wave?
On this week's Power Vertical Podcast, I discuss this with co-host Mark Galeotti, a senior policy fellow at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, and author of the blog In Moscow's Shadows; and Moscow-based journalist Anna Arutunyan, author of the book The Putin Mystique: Inside Russia's Power Cult.
Also on the podcast, Mark, Anna, and I talk about Forbes magazine naming Vladimir Putin the world's most powerful man for the fourth consecutive year.
Enjoy...
