Tens of thousands of Poles protested on July 20 in Warsaw after the country's lawmakers approved a measure that gives the president, not judges, the power to regulate the work of the Supreme Court and to appoint its judges. Critics say the bill, sponsored by the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), destroys judicial independence and puts judges under political control. (Reuters)
