Russian President Vladimir Putin was holding meetings in Astana with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev on a range of topics on July 7.

Putin had reportedly told Nazarbaev he hoped to discuss events in Afghanistan related to the upcoming withdrawal of international troops by the end of 2014.

Nazarbaev said he hoped Moscow and Astana would sign new documents on cooperation at an upcoming forum on interregional cooperation between the border regions of Russia and Kazakhstan in Yekaterinburg in October.

Putin also congratulated the longtime Kazakh leader on his 73rd birthday, which fell one day earlier.

"You have done very much for Kazakhstan and I am sure that you will do no less in the future," Putin told him.
