Pyongyang Suggests Embassies Evacuate

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow is in close contact with the United States, China, South Korea, and Japan over Pyongyang's request to consider evacuating embassies in North Korea.

Lavrov said on April 5 that the request was made to all the embassies in Pyongyang, amid an escalation of tensions on the peninsula.

He said Russia and other nations "are trying to clarify the situation."

Britain's Foreign Office said the request was part of the North's "continuing rhetoric."

Earlier on April 5, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said Seoul deployed two warships equipped with missile-defense systems on its east and west coasts.

The move was in response to the North moving at least one missile to its east coast the previous day.

Last week, Pyongyang announced that a "state of war" exists with South Korea.
