The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles says a record 71 countries have submitted films to compete for the 2012 Foreign Language Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards.
The submissions include films from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine, among others.
A committee of academy members will select the five films that will officially be nominated for the Oscar, considered one of the most prestigious prizes in the film world.
The nominations are to be announced on January 10, and the Academy Awards ceremony is due to be held on February 24.
Full-length feature films produced outside the United States that have a mostly non-English dialogue track are eligible for submission.
Last year’s winner was “A Separation” by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhad.
