Report: Belarusian Border Guards Detain Former Parliament Speaker

Belarusian border guards have reportedly detained the former speaker of the country's former parliament, Stanislau Shushkevich.

Russian ITAR-TASS news agency reports that he was detained at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border while returning from Vilnius, Lithuania, where he attended a political conference "The Community of Democracies."

The border officials did not specify the causes of detention but Shushkevich, who was the Belarus leader from 1991 through 1995, links the incident to the opposition protests scheduled for July 3, when the country observes Independence Day.
