Medical officials and witnesses say at least 11 people, including three women and a child, were and dozens injured when forces loyal to Yemeni President Abdullah Saleh shelled the country's second largest city Taez.
Witnesses said Republican Guard troops, commanded by Saleh's son Ahmed, fired artillery rounds into the center of Taez on November 11 while tens of thousands of protesters were calling for the veteran leader's departure.
In the capital Sanaa, thousands of demonstrators attended competing rallies for and against the regime.
Antigovernment activists said they planned after Friday Muslim prayers to march toward the city center, which has often been the site of clashes between protesters and security forces.
