Romanian Soccer Team Charged Over 'Racist' Fan Behavior

European soccer's governing body, UEFA, has charged the Romanian soccer federation with fan misconduct for racist chants and other banned behavior at a Nations League game.

UEFA said on October 16 that the "racist behavior" included chanting racist slogans when the national team played to a 0-0 draw against Serbia on October 14 in Bucharest's national stadium.

Romania fans also held up a banner linking refugees to terrorism, which appeared in videos posted online.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel will meet on October 25 to judge the charges, which include fans invading the field and lighting fireworks.

Sanctions could apply when Romania hosts Lithuania in the UEFA Nations League on November 17.
