On a visit to Warsaw, U.S. Republican Party presidential candidate Mitt Romney praised Poland as a model of democratic and economic transformation after the fall of communism more than 20 years ago.
Romney, who will challenge President Barack Obama in this November's U.S. election, on July 31 compared the situation in NATO and European Union member Poland to that in neighboring Russia.
"In Russia, once promising advances toward a free and open society have faltered. In a turbulent world, Poland stands as an example and a defender of freedom," Romney said.
Romney met with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
Romney earlier visited U.S. allies Britain and Israel during his overseas tour, which was aimed at strengthening his foreign policy credentials.
