In Russia, Call For Companies To Move HQs To Regions

Valentina Matvienko

The speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, is calling for major businesses in the country to move their bases to Russia’s regions.

Valentina Matvienko suggested that the headquarters for Gazprom should move to Tyumen, the main office of Rosneft to Siberia, Russia Railways to Ural, RusGidro to Krasnoyarsk, and Inter RAO to Kaliningrad.

Matvienko said transferring these companies’ headquarters to the regions would be a boost for the areas, not only in terms of economic impact but also in improved health-care facilities and social infrastructure.

She said it would also take some of the burden off Moscow.

Matvienko said at the start it would be easier for “companies with government participation” to move.

She said with new communications technology it would not problematic to operate from the regions.
