Russia Stops Work On AIDS Vaccine Due To Financial Cuts

A medical official says Russia has stopped works on development of a vaccine to prevent AIDS due to financial cutbacks.

The head of Russia's Federal Medical and Biological Agency, Vladimir Uiba, told reporters in Moscow on January 21 that a vaccine had passed several tests but due to lack of financing by the Health Ministry all other necessary tests were stopped.

Russian Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova (eds: a woman) said in May 2014 that Russia would develop an experimental sample of a new AIDS vaccine by the end of 2014.

According to the Federal Center for AIDS Prevention, some 650 thousand people in Russia are AIDS patients.
