A Russian woman has been detained in Italy on suspicion of drowning her nine-month-old son in the Mediterranean Sea.
Media reports in Italy say that a 40-year-old Muscovite, Natalia Sotnikova, was detained on December 11 in the Liguria region.
Reports say the woman's partner, who is not the boy's biological father, reported to police that they boy was missing.
They say CCTV camera records showed that Sotnikova left her hotel in the night on December 10 with the boy and returned without him.
Russia's consul general in Genoa, Yevgeny Boikov, told the state-run news agency TASS on December 12 that Sotnikova's rights were being protected and that she has been provided with a lawyer and an interpreter.
