SCO Counterterrorism Chief Visits Iran

The director of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's (SCO) antiterrorism center has led a delegation to Iran to discuss regional security.

The SCO antiterrorism center in Tashkent issued a statement on June 17 saying director Zhang Sinfen met with Iranian officials during a visit from June 9 to 13.

The center did not say why news of the visit was released four days after it ended.

Zhang met with senior officials from Iran's Foreign Ministry, the Supreme National Security Council, and border guard service.

Zhang and Iranian officials reportedly reviewed cooperation in combating international terrorism and placed a special focus on events in the Middle East and Afghanistan and how that might affect stability in Central Asia.

The SCO member states are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Iran has observer status in the SCO.
