Suu Kyi Falls Ill During News Conference

Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi is seen with the president of the International Labor Organization, Juan Somavia, in Geneva hours before she fell ill in Bern on June 14.

Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has halted a news conference in the Swiss capital, Bern, after she was taken ill.

Suu Kyi began her first trip to Europe in nearly 25 years with a stop in Geneva on June 14.

Shortly after the start of the news conference in Bern, she said she was exhausted after the long trip from Asia to Europe, then bent over and was sick before being led out of the room.

The highlight of Suu Kyi's two-week tour will be the long-awaited acceptance speech in Oslo for the Nobel Peace Prize she won in 1991.

For the last 24 years, Suu Kyi has either been under house arrest or refused to leave Myanmar during brief periods of freedom, fearing the military would not allow her to return.
