Syrian troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are reportedly advancing in a push to repel rebels from the western city of Homs.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says government forces regained control on May 2 of the Wadi Sayeh district in the center of Homs.
Assad's troops are trying to dislodge opposition fighters from several of the city's central districts that have been under rebel control for more than a year.
Homs, about 160 kilometers north of Damascus, is Syria's third-largest city.
Since the beginning of the anti-Assad revolt, the city has seen some of the worst urban warfare in the two-year-old conflict, which has killed more than 70,000 people.
