Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem has told the United Nations General Assembly in New York that Damascus "stands with any international effort aimed at fighting and combatting terrorism."
Muallem told the UN on September 29 that the world should give priority to combating militants from Islamic State (IS, or ISIS) as well as fighters from the Al-Nusra Front and other Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups.
After his speech, Muallem told AP that the United States does not inform Syria about every air strike before it happens.
But he said, “It is OK. We are fighting ISIS. They are fighting ISIS.”
Muallem also confirmed that Damascus was informed by Washington 24 hours before the first U.S. air strikes in Syrian territory.
Russia and Iran have both said U.S.-led strikes violate international law and should only be carried out with a UN mandate or a request from Syria’s government.
