Afghan officials say four police officers were killed in an overnight attack on a checkpoint in the remote northeastern province of Badakhshan.
Provincial police chief Abdul Saboor Nasrati said two police officers were injured in the attack in Warduj district on the Pakistani border, and that 16 others were presumed abducted.
In an online statement, purported Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the group.
The mountainous area of Warduj saw a similar attack by Taliban militants two months ago, in which three police officers were killed and 12 others abducted.
The abducted were released several weeks later.
Badakhshan Province borders Pakistan, Tajikistan and China.
