Slumping Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has ended her relationship with her new American coach, Jimmy Connors – after just one match.

The four-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one confirmed August 16 she had split with Connors.

The announcement came after Sharapova this week crashed out in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters in the United States, losing to American teenager Sloane Stephens.

Connors tweeted after returning to his home in Santa Barbara, California: "Back home in SB-- family, pups, and home cooking. Oh -- I forgot, and a vodka on the rocks."

Sharapova, 26, had hired Connors, an eight-time Grand Slam winner, after losing at Wimbledon in the second round in June.

Sharapova hasn’t won a major title since the 2012 French Open.
