Three Dead, 16 Missing In Rio Buildings Collapse

Rescue workers search the debris of collapsed buildings in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazilian rescuers recovered three bodies on January 26 from the rubble of three buildings that collapsed in downtown Rio de Janeiro.

Authorities also say that rescue teams pulled six people alive from the rubble, but at least 16 were still missing.

Three multistory buildings collapsed in the center of the city on January 25.

Rio de Janeiro's mayor, Eduardo Paes, said "a 20-story building, a 10-story building and a smaller building of three or four floors" had collapsed.

Paes indicated that the cause of the collapse could have been a “structural failure” caused by work being done on one of the buildings.
