Former Turkish Military Chief Of Staff Arrested

A former chief of staff of Turkey's armed forces has been detained in an investigation into the military's role in ousting the country's first Islamist-led government in the 1990s.

Turkish media said Ismail Hakki Karadayi was detained at his home in Istanbul on January 3.

He was chief of general staff from 1994 to 1998.

The military pressured Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan to resign in 1997 over his alleged attempts to raise the profile of Islam in the country.

Turkey's military sees itself as guarantor of the secular constitution and carried out three coups between 1960 and 1980.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party has had tense relations with the military for years and Erdogan has sharply curbed the power of the military.
